3D Blinds Configurator PoC — Conciptual Experiment

A Proof of Concept by Conciptual Ltd demonstrating how a modern blind retailer or manufacturer could allow customers to visualise, customise and configure a product in real time — directly in the browser, no plugins required.

3D blinds configurator proof-of-concept rendered in a modern interior setting

What this is

The 3D Blinds Configurator is a publicly accessible Proof of Concept developed internally by the Conciptual team. It demonstrates how a modern e-commerce or manufacturing business in the window covering industry could allow customers to visualise, customise and configure a blind product in real time — directly in the browser, without any plugins or downloads.

Like the Reel Propagation Visualiser, this tool is built for two audiences: it pushes the team deeper into WebGL, Three.js and real-time 3D rendering in the browser, and it gives potential clients in the retail and manufacturing space a concrete, working demonstration of what is possible — not a mockup, not a slide deck, but a live product they can interact with.

The gap this addresses

Most blind retailers today rely on static product photography, small fabric swatches and dropdown selectors. Customers make significant purchasing decisions — often for entire homes or new developments — with very little confidence in how the product will actually look in their space. The result is high return rates, low conversion confidence at point of sale, and missed upsell opportunities.

A real-time 3D configurator changes that dynamic entirely.

What the PoC demonstrates

Fabric, texture, and slat configuration view in the 3D blinds visualizer

3D modelling. A fully rendered 3D blind model displayed in the browser using WebGL — smooth, responsive and viewable from any angle.

Scene navigation. The 3D scene can be rotated and explored freely, giving the customer a full spatial understanding of the product before purchase.

Blind types. Two product types are supported — Venetian blinds and Roller blinds — each with their own geometry, behaviour and configuration options.

Mount type. The mounting configuration can be switched between inside recess and face fix, with the change reflected live on the model.

Colour selection. The customer selects from available colours and the 3D model updates in real time — no page reload, no static image swap.

Open / close state. The blind can be toggled between open and closed states, simulating real-world usage and giving the customer a sense of how the product operates.

Venetian tilt. For Venetian blinds, the slat angle can be adjusted via a tilt control — a smooth animation plays on the 3D model as the angle changes.

Preview on My Window. The most advanced feature in the PoC: the customer uploads a photograph of their own window, and the configured 3D blind is overlaid onto it — giving a realistic, personalised preview of how the product would look in their actual space. This is the feature that closes the gap between online browsing and in-home purchase confidence.

Why it matters commercially

The window covering industry is largely stuck in a static, catalogue-driven sales model. A 3D configurator addresses this directly:

  • Reduces purchase anxiety. Customers can see exactly what they are buying before they commit.
  • Increases average order value. Confidence in the product reduces hesitation on premium options and upsells.
  • Differentiates the retailer. In a market where most competitors show the same flat photography, an interactive configurator is a meaningful and memorable differentiator.
  • Reduces returns. Customers who have previewed the product in their own space are significantly less likely to return it.

Further development potential

Mounting options and dimension controls for custom window blinds

This PoC is intentionally scoped to validate the core technical approach. A production deployment could extend to:

  • Full product catalogue integration — dimensions, fabrics and pricing calculated in real time
  • Direct add-to-cart from the configurator, integrated with the retailer’s e-commerce platform
  • Additional blind types: Roman, Pleated, Vertical
  • Measurement guide integration — customer inputs window dimensions, the model scales accordingly
  • White-label deployment for blind retailers and manufacturers across any market

A note on this PoC

This is a Proof of Concept — scoped to demonstrate core capabilities rather than represent a finished product. The purpose is to validate the technical approach, gather feedback, and identify the most valuable features to develop further. If you are a retailer, manufacturer or investor interested in taking this further, get in touch.
